Babywearing dads - are they rare?

Green Mama from happy green babies.com says that her 'husband seems to have a baby wearing phobia' but on a hiking trip he tried the Ergo Baby Carrier and was converted!

She says:

"The versatility of the Ergo makes it a perfect carrier to own.  The Ergo fits my short (5’1″) body perfectly and easily adjusts to fit my husband (5’10″).  The best part of the Ergo is that it can be worn on your back, just like a backpack and it distributes the weight of your baby onto your hips rather than your shoulders.  For this reason it is not uncomfortable to wear this carrier for extended periods of time on your back.  Even better, this carrier fits infants with the Infant Insert through toddlers.  I think what’s really super attractive about this carrier for dads is that it is simple to put on with the snap of two buckles.  There is no fancy tying, no confusing straps, it’s so simple!"

The Ergo Baby Carrier is Brilliant!

Kirsty sent the Natural Nursery this glowing review of her new baby sling.

"Brilliant! I was using the Kari-me sling, until I spent the day walking around the zoo carrying my 13 month old. Agony in my shoulders and back! A friend recommended the Ergo Baby and am genuinely amazed at how comfortable it is! I've just come back from a weeks walking holiday in Cornwall, with no buggy, and absolutely no pain! So much quicker and easier than tying the sling and has a very useful zip pocket.
Delivery was also excellent.
Kirsty 5/5"

Ergo Baby Carrier Review: "very comfortable"

Natural Nursery customer Sarah sent in this review of the Ergo Baby Carrier:

"Fantastic. I have struggled with other carriers, but a friend recommended this one (as did a lot of reviews on this site!) and I am so pleased I gave it a try - very comfortable to wear in all 3 positions, and gives the baby a great seating/sleeping position. Left it late to order just before going on holiday, but it arrived very promptly

Ergobaby Carrier - great for travelling.

This article from American site Learnvest has some great ideas for painless travelling and recommends an Ergo Baby Carrier as a great space saver.

4. Stroller

If you are like many mothers who have invested in big, honking strollers, you’ll be stumped trying to fit the behemoth onto a plane. If you’re bringing a tiny tot, a marsupial carrier like an Ergo  kills three birds with one stone: You won’t have to bother with a stroller, you’ll have your hands free for bags and tickets and your baby is likelier to sleep through the insanity of the airport because he’ll be comforted by your closeness.

Is a sling the thing for getting hands free?

This article is from Mom2Mom,
Q. I'm desperate to have my hands free while I take care of my three-month-old son, but I've heard slings can be dangerous. Is there a type of sling or wrap I can use so I can get a few things done during the day?
A. What a smart momma you are to seek a solution to your challenge of getting daily tasks done while still being able to tend to your baby.
Babywearing, as it’s called in the attachment-parenting world, can be an excellent solution. Infant slings and wraps have been used for thousands of years in cultures around the world. In addition to freeing up both hands, babywearing provides many benefits to the baby, including promoting a positive bond between child and parent. (http://www.askdrsears.com/html/5/t051100.asp#T051103) And, according to anthropologists who travel the world studying infant-care practices in other cultures, infants in babywearing cultures cry much less.
Having used a sling with both of my children, it’s one of the essential items I keep in my “postpartum doula kit” to use while working with clients. I like to be able to model to new parents how to get chores done – like laundry, for instance – while still meeting the needs of the baby via safe sling use.

ERGObaby Carrier - I can't decide!

This is a question on Yahoo Answers asking about the ERGObaby Carrier.

Ergo baby carrier - I can't decide between the Original, Organic or Performance versions...
Which do you like?

My baby tends to get over-heated easily so I'm leaning towards the Ergo Performance, but I've heard the Organic is so much more comfy. If he's not comfy in the Performance, then there's no point in getting it if he won't sit in it, you know? So, I'm looking for any opinions on the Ergo in general and also if anyone has tried the different models. They are quite pricy and I don't want to spend the money it we aren't going to use it. THANKS!"

The Natural Nursery has pages of information about the different types of ERGObaby Carriers and lots of instructional videos. There is also a page of reviews so you can see what customers think of the different types.

10 Reasons to Buy a Baby Sling

Hands free baby carrying with the ERGObaby Carrier1)Hands free - When your baby is in a sling you get your hands back to do whatever you need to - I've cooked, cleaned, shopped, sewn, knitted and even worked at a market stall with my baby in a sling.
2)Comforted baby - For a newborn the environment inside the sling simulates the womb, the baby can hear the heartbeat of the wearer and feels safe. When your baby is carried close you can respond really quickly to needs.
3)Less burping - The constant movement in a sling can help to ease colic and reflux.
4)Better head shape - There is no pressure on the head with a baby sling and babies who are carried are less prone to Flat Head Syndrome (which they can get if they spend a lot of time on their backs). Calin Bleu Baby Sling at the Natural Nursery
5)Helps bonding - Slings are excellent bonding tools for fathers and grandparents.
6)Happier baby - Babies who are carried have less stress hormones.
7)Milk on Tap - Most slings are easy to breastfeed in discreetly.
8)Stairs are no problem - No more thumping a pushchair up steps!
9)Cleaner Air - In a pushchair the baby is at the same height as exhaust pipes, in a sling, the baby is higher up and away from them.
10)No bashing bags - I lost count of the number of times people smashed their bags into my pushchair - you don't get that problem with slings as your baby is carried at your chest height.

ERGObaby Sucking Pads Review and Video

ERGObaby sucking pads

This video explains how to use the ERGObaby sucking pads. They extend the life of your carrier by reducing the number of times it needs to be washed. Children love to teeth on the carrier shoulder straps of the ERGObaby carrier. The sucking pads are made of 100% cotton. Open the sucking pads to attach them to the shoulder straps. They are reversible and machine washable.
A Natural Nursery customer sent in this review of the ERGObaby sucking pads:
Worth It -
Great for a suckt/dribbly/pukey baby. Soft and wash well. I've also used them in place of the my carseat chest strap pads when those are in the wash.

ERGOBaby Performance Carrier Review - Fantastic 5/5

Performance Ergo Baby Carrier
 Fantastic, 5/5

I am delighted with my Ergo Performance. My baby is a really 'hot-blooded' little boy and both he and I were overheating with wrap carriers. We both stay nice and cool with this. My husband really likes this carrier as it looks quite sporty and he has found it really comfy to use (6"1, size Large). I on the other hand am only 5'2"/size 10 and also find this carrier very comfy. Of note, the shoulder straps are different to the original - they are not thick and squishy but firmer and thinner. However, I have never found them uncomfy even after hours. They are also more tapered and come in closer together.

I was worried this might mean they rubbed on my neck. However, having tried both the Performance and Original I found these actually a much better fit - the original straps are very bulky and wide-set and meant it kind of hung off my outer shoulders and pulled. So some smaller ladies may find the straps rub on their neck but I've actually found this a much better fit. Although this is not a 'waterproof' carrier, I have survived 30mins in a big downpour. I had my regular-sized waterproof coat on over and was able to do this up at the bottom (below the Ergo) to cover my son's legs. I put the Ergo hood up, tucked his arms in and scampered home! I was impressed to find an essentially dry baby underneath when I got in, who had enjoyed the adventure! The lightweight nature of this carrier also meant it then dried out quickly. Overall, a functional, versatile carrier which is comfy for 2 very different sized people and also very easy to adjust between us.

Why Can't my Baby Face out in the ErgoBaby Carrier?

February 2015 - updated to include information on the new Ergo 360 Baby Carrier Sling.

For many years, ErgoBaby made only carriers that would allow babies to be worn facing their parents when being carried on the front.

The are very many reasons why parent-facing should be the default for front carrying infants and these are detailed in the original version of this article set out below.

So why have Ergo brought out a carrier that enables children to be carried world facing, ie away from the parent?

Ergo appreciate that the most important thing is that parents carry their children and the Ergo 360 is designed to allow parents to have the flexibility to carry their babies in the most ergonomic positions possible, whether facing in or out, on the front, back or hip.

Due to its innovative design, the Ergo 360 holds your baby:

  • In the correct ergonomic position with knees up high at or above the hips, in the m position
  • Has a unique bucket design to support developing spines in the correct c shape
  • Is comfortable for both parent and child
  • Gives excellent support for both parent and child and prevents undue stress on the baby's crotch area

It is recommended that the world facing position be used for only short periods from around 6 months and up and only when the child is awake.

Parents should continue to closely monitor their children and respond to any signs of tiredness or over stimulation by returing the child to the parent facing position.

The original article follows below:

Why Can't my Baby Face out in the ErgoBaby Carrier?

The ErgoBaby Carrier has been very specifically designed so that the baby faces inwards, towards the parent, when they are in the front carry position.

ErgoBaby took this decision following the recomendation of Dr. Evelin Kirkilionis.

Why should a baby face inwards when being carried:

  • You can communicate better with your baby
  • You can make eye contact with your baby, evaluate and respond to their facial cues
  • You can better determine and respond to your baby's needs
  • Babies in outward facing baby carriers cannot turn away form stimuli when they need to and may become overwhelmed
  • Inward facing baby slings tend to allow the baby to have more and better sleep
When you are carrying your baby in the Ergo Carrier, you will find that they are kept stimulated and interested by watching YOUR reactions and listening to you talk to them.

If you want to allow them to join in a conversation or to see something in particular, you will find that you angle your body so that you are both looking in the same direction, sideways on.

This is better than using a front facing carrier, as you and your baby can respond to each others' visual cues, which you cannot do if your baby is facing away from you.

You can find more tips on using the Ergo 360 as a front facing baby carrier on our website.

Do I Need the Infant Insert for the Ergo Baby Carrier?

This is one of the questions that we get asked the most by customers.

The Infant Insert (or Heart to Heart Insert) is designed to fit inside the Ergo Baby Carrier to ensure that your baby is sitting in the safest, most comfortable position.

It is used for babies from newborn to around 4-6 months, depending upon your baby's development and growth.

The insert supports your baby’s head and neck, as well as spine and hips during those first crucial months of development.

You can stop using the insert once your baby can hold his head up for long periods of time and can comfortably splay their legs/hips to sit in the baby carrier itself.

Each baby will develop at their own pace and these two milestones may not occur at the same time, so you will need to monitor your baby and decide when you stop using the insert.

The new Heart2Heart Infant Insert supports the Natural Sitting Position, sometimes called the "Spread-Squat Position", with baby facing you in the carrier.

This prevents "crotch-dangle" and any health implications that may arise from a baby not being correctly supported in a baby sling.

The bottom pillow in the Heart2Heart Infant Insert can be removed from the insert and placed inside the carrier, with your baby sitting on top of it. This allows babies from around 5-6 months old, who may no longer need head and neck support, to be at an optimal height inside the ERGObaby Carrier.

The Heart2Heart ErgoBaby insert is available from The Natural Nursery in cotton (£18.90) and organic cotton (£34.90) in a range of colours to match the Ergo Baby Carriers.

Types of Ergo Baby Carrier

As the Ergo Baby Carrier has become ever more popular, a wider range has been brought out.

The first Ergo baby backpack was the Classic, which was discontinued some years ago.

It was replaced by the Ergo New Generation (sometimes called the New Gen) and now known as the "Original Ergo Carrier".

An range of organic cotton Ergo Carriers is also available, some with beautiful embroidery on them.

Some taller men reported that they found the Ergo Original to be a little short in the body for some, so the Sport Ergo Carrier was introduced. It will fit women from around 5' 4" all the way up to 6' 5" men.

For very active parents, and those living in hotter countries, the Ergo Performance was introduced in 2010. It is made from high performace materials, rather than the 100% cotton or organic cotton of the Original Ergos.

The latest Ergo Carrier to be brought out is is the Ergo Options - the first solid black Ergo that can be purchased on its own or with a set of extra covers that can be used to vary the look of your baby sling.

Welcome to the new Ergo Baby Carrier UK blog, maintained by Arabella Greatorex of The Natural Nursery, one of the UK's leading suppliers of natual and organic baby products.

We have been selling Ergo Baby Carriers for over 5 years and we have helped hundreds of families choose the right baby sling for their baby or toddler.

I carried my daughter in an Ergo Carrier until she was over 4 1/2 years old - I don't drive so having a sling that allowed me to carry a such a large child for periods of up to 2 hours at a time was vital.

At The Natural Nursery, we are always happy to talk you through the difference between the various versions of the Ergo Baby Carrier and all our products come with our 30 day refund policy.

You can buy ErgoBaby Baby Carriers for delivery to the UK and EU from The Natural Nursery or do contact us on 01392 499 394 if you would like some more information or have a question.
